McDonough is a suburban city steeped in Southern culture and heritage located 30 minutes south of Atlanta via Interstate 75. Gritz is a laidback and inviting spot for hearty Southern breakfast and lunch fare. Pippin’s Barbecue is the best choice in McDonough for delicious pulled pork, ribs, and Brunswick stew. Pasta Max Café serves gourmet pasta and pizzas in a hip relaxed setting. Queen Bee Coffee Company is a local favorite for fresh-roasted coffee. I-75 runs through the west of McDonough with several shopping centers and commercial areas dotted around the highway. In the northwest, businesses include Best Buy, Target, Home Depot, and the Regal McDonough multiplex movie theater. Truett’s Grill is a 1950s-style diner named in honor of Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy. Truett’s goes beyond a typical Chick-fil-A location, with a menu including steak and Southern breakfast specialties as well as a fun indoor train for kids. To McDonough’s southwest on I-75, the McDonough Marketplace and South Point shopping centers feature retailers such as Hobby Lobby, JCPenney, Kirkland’s, Kohl’s, Office Depot, and T.J. Maxx.
McDonough brands itself as a “Town for All Seasons” with lots to see and do at any time of year. Southern Belle Farm is a family-owned working farm with a variety of seasonal activities and events. Enjoy strawberry picking in spring, peach picking in summer, a pumpkin patch and corn maze in fall, and Christmas tree decorating in winter. Heritage Park has a historic village with an 1820s log cabin, schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, and library as well as a 1930s steam engine locomotive. Heritage Park also features softball fields, walking and jogging tracks, a community garden, and a playground. The Veterans Wall of Honor at Heritage Park pays tribute to those who have fought in every conflict from the Revolutionary War onward. Uniforms, vehicles, and other artifacts from World War I onward are displayed at the Heritage Park Veterans Museum. The Henry Players Theater stages a variety of Broadway performances throughout the year. In September, the Henry Players Theater hosts the unique Georgia International Cigar Box Guitar Festival. This festival gives visitors the chance to play with, purchase, and learn about these unusual instruments alongside performances from talented local and out-of-town musicians. In May, the Geranium Festival fills the Downtown McDonough Square with artwork, handicrafts, live music, and delicious eats. The nearby Atlanta Motor Speedway is a major motorsports arena with one of the fastest tracks on the NASCAR circuit.
McDonough is zoned in the Henry County public school district.
